Family Surf Vacations - Family
Surfer I
This is an individual, self guided itinerary with open dates that can be customized.
Introduction
Ok, we know you surfing families are out there. And we built
this family surf vacation just for you just for you.
A family of 4
will take an incredible journey of surfing and nature appreciation,
from the wild North Pacific and the remote boat-surfing location
of Witches Rock & Ollie's Point to the heart of the Jaco
jungle canopy and Hermosa surf breaks of the Central Pacific.
Surfing has been around long enough to have surfer dads
and even grandpas (better known as Grizzled Warriors of Old,
watch it grommets), and there are more surfmoms out there
everyday. And there's traditions that should keep going
and going. For many, surfing is philosophy, and philosophy
needs to be handed down through the generations.
So go ahead and bond! Dad has always wanted to see
Ollie's Point anyway, from that Endless Summer movie he saw
long ago...

Detailed Itinerary
Day
1-4
Get off
the plane, grab the 4x4 and journey to famous Tamarindo.
It's a fairly
straight shot northwest from San José, and you'll enjoy the drive, perhaps
stopping off for a famous local cup of coffee (there are coffe plantations outside
the city) and a distinctive CR meal.
It's kinda like driving from San Diego to San Francisco (plus or minus a few
potholes!), through some very beautiful country, straight up Freeway 1. Tamarindo,
the "surf
mecca" of the north, is centrally located to
many fantastic surf breaks up and down the Pacific North coast
of Costa Rica.
You'll be staying at the amazing Hotel & Villas
Cala Luna (one of our webmaster's favs in all of Costa
Rica, hi Boss), a secluded and enchanting hotel offering only
21 luxury villas and 20 deluxe rooms. You'll be staying in
the 2 bedroom luxury villa.
Villas are equipped with one, two or three bedrooms each
with king size beds, air conditioning, fans, two complete
bathroom, spacious living rooms with sofa, dining table,
satellite tv, CD player, fully equipped kitchens with all
the amenities including coffee and espresso maker, etc.,
and their own private pool.
On site amenities include international/local restaurant,
pool bar & restaurant, large swimming pool (separate
than the villas private pools), room service, laundry, babysitting,
boat excursions, a friendly and professional staff always
willing to help you out.
Plenty of breaks around the immediate area, including beginner
and intermediate level surfing breaks.
Charter to the North
During your 4 night stay at Cala Luna, you'll be taking
a boat ride (probably on day three) north to 2 of the most
famous surf breaks in the world, Witches
Rock and Ollie's Point. This one
day excursion starts
at Playas del Coco and is a full happy family day of surfing.
For reference, this is the No Frills Daily Charters option
on the hyperlink above which includes 25ft open cover boat,
captain, water, fruits and ice cooler. Feel free to upgrade
to the FULL frills - with wonderful meals and mixed drinks,
snacks, and other amenities. There's even room for another
surfer or one lucky kid bummin' around with yours (boat holds
maximum 5 people.)
Day 5-8
Tired? Don't stop now! Jump in the 4x4 and journey south
to the famous Jaco/Hermosa region.
The area is THE definitive surf mecca of
the central pacific coast and possibly of all Costa Rica.
Get ready to surf locations like Boca Barranca (great for
longboarding), Caldera, Playa Jaco and Playa Hermosa (some
say the most consistent conditions on the Pacific).
You'll
be staying 3 nights at the Club
del Mar, just steps from the surf. It's a smaller, boutique
hotel, but that doesn't mean you'll encounter attitudes,
just that there's going to be less people around. Big trees
everywhere, friendly staff, great restaurant, and good amenities.
Each casita has an ocean view and is designed to provide
the concept of indoor/outdoor living in harmony with
the surroundings. The two bedroom, two baths, single
level units have high ceilings, 1100 square feet of air conditioned
living space, 8 ft. doors, louvered windows, a spacious family
gathering area, and sleeping accommodations for six.
From this location, you'll have access within minutes or
under an hour to some of the best surfing locations in Costa
Rica.
Canopy Tour in Jaco
During
your stay at the Club del Mar, you'll be taking an incredible
family adventure called a canopy tour. If you don't know
what this is, just think of the guy to the left.
Basically,
you suspend a very, very strong cable between two trees waaay
up in the canopy of a jungle forest, then sliiiide from point
to point, observing wildlife that you would not normally
see from the canopy floor. It is, without a doubt, an incredible
way to see the beauty and spendor of the savage rainforest
and unique nature of Costa Rica.
The Canopy Tour consists of 13 platforms, 7 cables of varying
lengths, a 3 storey tree house, a Tarzan Swing, a suspension
bridge and a 90 feet rappel down at the end (optional for
the adventure seekers).
Does that sound like fun for the whole family? You bet it
does! Watch mom scream, kids learn respect for nature the
hard way, ... er, you get the idea. But seriously, it's safe
and exhilirating, almost tranquil, and you'll never experience
anything like it again.
Time to go!
Alas, surfing family, it is time to go. On your 8th day
it's back to San José and onto the plane. Consider
a extending a day or two in the cultural center of Costa
Rica.
Come back with a family full of memories!
