Surfing in Costa Rica

The Surfer's Dream 13 dayEdge Of The World: Pavones/Matapalo

Introduction

Been to Costa Rica before? Looking for a more 'remote' excusion than Hermosa or Jaco? Then journey to the savage south for a remote surfing experience. You'll be visiting both Pavones and Matapalo, situated on or around the Osa Peninsula on the South Pacific ocean. This is what it means to get away from it all!

Pavones

Pavones is one of Costa Rica's most famous surf breaks offering one of the world's longest lefts which, on a good day, can connect for 2 - 3 minute rides. The wave has several sections which allow for carving, pumping and, of course, showing off for the folks sipping on their Imperials at the Cantina at the end of the break. This area is extremely remote and if you can catch it on a good day, the logistical nightmares surrounding your arrival will be well worth it.

Matapalo

Situated on the extreme tip of the Osa Peninsula, Matapalo offers the extreme adventurer with an opportunity to witness one of the few untouched, pristine regions in Costa Rica.

Matapalo combines dense jungles, breathtaking beaches, world class surfing in a peaceful, remote setting. Matapalo offers three excellent point breaks that, with the right swell, will make any traveler unpack, and stay a while. It is important to mention that this area is extremely remote and all power here is provided by solar energy. There are no restaurants, bars, shops and therefore, all hotels include all meals in their stay.

Finally, there you'll stay a few days in Dominical, a fantastic beach on the way home. Airfaire to Golfito and 4x4 rental included in price!

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Get off the plane and cart over to the Hampton Inn & Suites with a complimentary airport shuttle. OK, it's not the most exotic of places, but it is centrally located in San José, and there are plenty of restaurants and attractions around the area to delve into, including museums and landmarks if you're into the cultural thing. All rooms are equipped with two double beds, cable TV, air conditioning, telephone, and private bath with hot water. On site amenities include a swimming pool, tv lounge with happy hour, gift shop, and a continental breakfast is included in your stay. Get ready for your flight tomorrow to parts unknown! Well, remote, at least.

Day 2-6

Casa Siempre DomingoThen board an in-country flight to Pavones, a great destination for the South Pacific in Costa Rica. Pavones is a pretty remote area; you'll pickup your Toyota Rav4 4x4 at the airport and off you go to the Casa Siempre en Domingo.

This is a unique, private Bed & Breakfast on the Pacific Coast of Southern Costa Rica offering pure relaxation and seclusion with tropical forests, ocean vistas and sandy beaches. Casa Siempre Domingo offers modern accommodations, personalized service and genuine hospitality. This does not mean you're far away from the waves, compadre, but a little luxurious seclusion never hurt anyone.

Day 7-8

Done surfing yet? No you're not! It's across the bay to Matapalo to the Bosque del Cabo - a private resort located 500 ft above the ocean where the Golfo Dulce meets the Pacific Ocean, nestled in the unspoiled jungles of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula.

Bosque del CaboEach bungalow offers stunning ocean views, modern bathrooms with outdoor garden showers, a king size bed with mosquito net and porches equipped with hammocks and easy chairs.

On site amenities include a restaurant/bar area, pool, bar and a 600 acre private reserve with trails leading to the ocean.

Day 9-10

Villas Rio MarNow that your 'remote' leg of the journey is done, grab your 4x4 and wind your way up the coastline to the southern Central Pacific, to beautiful Dominical. You'll stay at the Villas Rio Mar, situated on the banks of the Baru river only 500 meters from the beach and surrounded by impressive tropical forests. Closeby is Playa Dominical, a strong break with lefts and rights. Consistent year-round. The northern end of the beach offers bigger sets while the southern end is better for intermediate surfers.

Playa DominicalThis jungle resort offers a relaxing environment with 1st class hospitality. The resort consists of 40 thatched roof bungalows with open terrace like living rooms, king size beds, private baths with hot water, safety deposit box, fans, mini bar, and hammock.

You'll be leaving on the third day back to San Jose (about a 4 hour trip) and boarding your flight. Take home with you some great memories of remote surfing in paradise!
